Postdoctoral Positions at the Institute of Astrophysics, National Taiwan University

The Institute of Astrophysics at National Taiwan University invites applications for 1-2 postdoctoral researcher positions in extragalactic astrophysics.

The successful applicants will work with Dr. Ting-Wen Lan on investigating the physical processes driving galaxy evolution by using large survey datasets in combination with statistical and machine learning techniques. One main research direction is probing the physical properties of the circumgalactic medium and the relationship between galaxies and their CGM by using the large spectroscopic dataset from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey.

The successful applicants will be able to join the DESI collaboration and conduct research with the dataset. In addition, the successful applicants will have access to various observational facilities, including Subaru, CFHT, JCMT, and ALMA, for their research projects and have access to clusters for CPU and GPU computing. There are also opportunities to co-advise graduate and/or undergraduate students.

The position(s) will start between Spring and Fall of 2022 and will initially be for two years, with the possibility of renewal for two additional years, contingent upon funding availability and satisfactory annual progress evaluations. Requirements are a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or a related field (by the start of the appointment). Expertise in one or more of the following areas is desirable: (1) statistical analysis of large datasets, (2) machine learning techniques, (3) galaxy evolution, (4) cosmology.

Applicants need to submit a single pdf file which includes (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) a publication list, (3) a summary of previous research (2 pages) and (4) a research plan (1 page). Applicants are also requested to arrange three letters of recommendation. All the materials should be directly sent to twlan@ntu.edu.tw. The application deadline is 2022 April 1st.
